How effective is the depo shot?

I'm a 20 year old woman trying to figure out the best birth control to use for the first time.

Do NOT take the Depo shot. Especially for your first time on BC. It’s way too extreme a method. No doctor in their right mind would prescribe it for such a young woman. If your doctor is suggesting it, fine another practitioner. 
I was on Depo for two years after having a premature baby. The drug information with the shot says it’s only suggested for a MAX of two years. And I took it because it was a health risk for me to get pregnant again. 
After my last shot, it took 7 months for my period to return. Now I get it so irregularly - but like, twice as often, longer and far heavier than ever before. 
Find another method.

I'm a firm believer that the depo shot can make women infertile or have complications with their reproductive system. It's basically synthetic progesterone making your body think it's pregnant so you don't ovulate or build a uterine lining. Those chemicals give you some of the worst side effects out of all the birth control out there. I wish someone had told me the risks before I stepped into that clinic at 15 and decided to take it for 3 years. One year over the recommended dosage use. Prolonged use is linked to loss of bone mass. I learned this all after the 3 years of injecting that toxic shit into my body. They usually fully disclose risks in the paperwork you sign, but I was a minor and I never signed anything. But I guess they didn't want another teen pregnancy because they still gave me that shot.
I'm 22 now and I've had 2 miscarriages within 2 years.

So I’m not voting because for me it was not effective at all. I ended up pregnant and then miscarrying and it was absolutely awful. Plus the side effects were so miserable, I wouldn’t bleed for the 3 months after the shot and then I’d bleed for 3 weeks if I got the shot again and when it finally wore off I bled for 3 months. Personally I think this is the worst form of birth control at least from my own personal experience.

it is not ment to be used longer than 2 years. 
you have to take calcium supplements and have your bone density checked regularly. 
depo side effect is osteoporosis. 
hair loss
weight gain 
mood swings
and infertility

i got the shot after having two kids. i was on it for a year and took a full year to get out of my system. once i started having regular periods i immediately got pregnant. got the shot one time after having third kid took almost another year to get out of my system but got pregnant that time with only one period. i didn't have a period or cramping either time. i didnt gain weight but never lost any either. everyone's body reacts different.

I agree with the other commenter, I also was not a big fan. I've been on multiple types of the pill, Depo and Nexplanon and I liked Depo the least. If you get symptoms that suck like bleeding problems there is nothing you can do but wait the 3 months for it to wear off. Plus it made me feel pregnant. Super hungry and emotional, bloated...
but with that said some women love it! just something to think about. good luck!
