How many failed IUIs until your doctor moves you on to IVF?

How many unsuccessful IUIs did your doctor tell you to go through before moving on to IVF?

One, but I have PCOS and he has low counts, so iui was likely never going to work for us... in hindsight I’m really glad she was honest with us about that even though it hurt at the time.  We have three frozen embryos right now and are gearing up to do our first transfer soon.

We’re going to try up to 8 iuis. My husband has retrograde ejaculation, so we cannot conceive naturally, but iui gives us the same shot as other couples TTC naturally. We cannot afford ivf, so it makes sense for us to do several iuis because it’s about $600 for us, whereas ivf is $12,000.

My RE told us they usually do three, but it depends on your diagnosis as well. We just had our consultation for moving on to IVF (in the middle of our third IUI currently), but with their “IVF Bootcamp” schedule we can’t start the process until the end of August so we’ll possibly be getting through a total of four IUIs in that case. Most of the time I hear that women regret not moving on to IVF sooner, but unfortunately you just never know what’ll end up working!

We'll do 5 or 6 and then discuss moving on to IVF.  Our IUIs only cost $200 each time and my meds are covered for the rest of the year since we've reached our deductible so that will save us money.  We only have 8 vials of our daughter's donor in storage and he's retired so I'd like to save 2 vials for IVF.  I know that one is enough but I like to have the extra one for peace of mind...in case of an accident.  In your case I guess it would depend on your diagnosis, your age, and how much you pay for each IUI.  For us it's worth it to do up to 6 IUIs because of how inexpensive they are compared to IVF.  I'msoeing chicken though(39) so after 5 or 6 tries we'll have to decide quickly if we want to pony up the dough to try IVF.   Best of luck on your decision.  If IUI isn't too expensive then it might be worth giving it one more shot.  A friend of mine conceived her daughter on her 4th IUI.

Thanks for all the info! Our doctor wants us to do 6 IUIs and then move on to IVF, which I’m starting to think is too many. We’ve had two unsuccessful, about to go on to our third, and I’ve been researching and seeing where the average is 3 and how if you haven’t conceived in 3 tries you probably won’t. We’re thinking of telling him we’d like to go ahead and move on to IVF since our insurance covers infertility. 
The reason we’re going through infertility treatment is because my husband’s doctor made a mistake in surgery when he was 10 and damaged his vas defrens so now he’s unable to have biological children and we have to use donor sperm. But as far as we know I’m healthy. Ugh, what to do!

We had to do at least 3 medicated iuis. Finished first round of ivf now prepping for frozen transfer in little less than 2 weeks.

Our clinic says they have the come to Jesus talk after four unsuccessful medicated IUIs. We’ve had three and at our request are having a consult next month to see if it’s worth trying a fourth or if we should move on. 
It’s also worth noting that there are different levels of medicated IUI. Our first IUI was just clomid to help me ovulate. Second was clomid plus trigger shot. Third was clomid, menopur to boost my mature follicle count, trigger shot, and progesterone to delay my period. I think the original plan was to try three clomid or clomid/trigger IUIs and then talk and upping the meds. Since I kept only producing one mature follicle, they decided to be more aggressive sooner and put me on menopur injections. I got my period a week early after my second IUI so they had me take progesterone after the third IUI. If we do try a fourth, it’d be with all the meds again.

my doctor showed us the stats and said he does a 3 strikes and you're out method. ultimately your chances are extremely low after 3, but obviously those stats don't take into account all of the different infertility reasons. ultimately he says it's our decision but our insurance pays for both so we decided on 3 iuis before ivf, I am 11dpiui for our first one, and it's definitely something I can handle 3 more of. i don't feel pregnant, and I'm feeling pmsy, so I'm pretty sure we'll be doing at least one more. the ivf process is overwhelming to me so I won't be going to that quickly.
