Waiting another year to enroll my son in Kindergarten...?
I’d really like some feedback on this choice to wait another year before enrolling my child into kindergarten or letting him go this year. His birthday falls on Aug 8 which is exactly the first day of school. He will be turning 5, but hasn’t ever been to pre-school, Pre-K, or any dare-care before.
I feel like I was the last to know that it was legal in our state to allow children to start when they are 6. I literally just found out this week (3 weeks before school starts).
So now my husband and I are left with this decision that we feel will ultimately affect him the rest of his educational career. We feel he isn’t socially ready to go. He is really dependent on me, for example he can’t wipe his own bottom after using the bathroom, which I know is 100% completely my fault. There’s other things that I wasn’t aware of as far as, children needing to know how to write their own name, honestly he hasn’t mastered holding a pencil correctly, he can recognize about half the alphabet but can only write a few of them. He is so active and I’m just scared he isn’t ready to sit still for 20 min or longer and listen, learn, and obey the rules. He is on the small side, so I feel I’d rather know he would be a small 6 year old than a small 5 year old. So I’m actually relieved to hear that I can wait another year and get him prepared for kindergarten with everything I know now. Will I be making a mistake? What are the things that I haven’t yet thought of? Please put in your feedback.
