Help w first relationship

My LD (long distance) boyfriend of almost 5 months asked for a break to figure out some things emotionally. He’s going through something personal that I don’t know about/he won’t tell me about. We agreed to be continue being exclusive during this break, but it’s like we’re not together either. I’ve always been scared because I read that breaks are a transition to a break up but each relationship is different. We aren’t talking at all, and I’m just trying to focus on me and let him focus on himself. I go back to school in a month so ideally that’s when I’d see him next depending on how he’s doing with whatever’s going on.

I guess my question is how does a break work?
