What to do when your not sure

So there’s this guy that I have been kind of flirting with for the past few years. But I don’t know if he has been getting the signals but sometimes I catch him staring at me or he’ll set like kind of close to me but make sure nobody sets between us. I’ve been kind of getting the courage to say something or do something about it but I’m so scared of what will happen cause he’s quite a bit older then me and all our friends are the same people. I don’t know what to do.
