Do you give her money?
An elderly Asian woman is standing outside a commercial food place, selling produce from a farmers market for money to fix her car. She speaks poor English, and it’s clear she is poor, her teeth are bad, and she has nothing but the pushcart of produce.
She first asked my husband, he was uncertain and a little uncomfortable, he went inside to get our food for that night. She then comes over to our car (she knew my husband and I were together) and asked again to buy her produce because she needed to fix her car. I explained I didn’t have any money because I didn’t bring my wallet, she continued to tell me to buy her produce, and then told me to go to an ATM for money. I repeated again that I didn’t have my wallet, she told me to ask my husband again if he would buy something.
I felt bad for her, but I also felt like she was being pushy and a little rude. Would you have given her money?
*Let me also add that I live in a city where holding a cardboard sign on the side of the road is practically a career choice 🙄 (there are many either fake, or else self-inflicted beggars and homeless here) so I’m pretty distrustful of these people
