Pap smear?

I’ve never had one, I’m 19 and have had a lot of issues with my menstrual cycle and have been diagnosed with ovarian cysts, do Pap smears hurt? What should I expect? Any do’s and dont’s? I’m just very nervous

They can be uncomfortable. You might feel a pinching/cramping sensation when they swab for the sample. But it's not painful.
You may not even need to do a pap smear, because they don't recommend them under 21. But they may do a pelvic exam which is pretty much the same process. You'll be given a paper gown and asked to undress. Then they will have you lay on the table, and help you into position with your feet in the stirrups and your butt nearly hanging off the table. They will insert a plastic or metal device called a speculum to open you up -- it looks scary and again, can be uncomfortable but you shouldn't be in pain. Then they will swab your cervix with a number of oversized cotton swabs and/or the tool that takes a sample for the pap smear. Again, this can create a pinching/cramping sensation but it's over quickly. Once they remove the speculum, they will probably do an internal and external exam with their fingers to check for anything unusual or painful. And once that's done they will give you something to clean yourself up and you can get dressed again.
At some point they will probably also offer a breast exam. This is typically optional but I recommend you accept it; it gives you a good baseline for what feels normal for you and allows you a chance to voice any concerns you may have when doing your self-checks.
In terms of dos and don'ts, shower beforehand and do your best to relax. You don't need to shave or anything unless you're more comfortable doing so. And the whole process is a lot smoother the more relaxed you are. You don't need to be concerned about how you look or smell or anything; your doctor does these exams all the time, and their job is to help you, not to judge you.

They don’t hurt me. They’re a little uncomfortable, but not painful. They’re really weird, but ask your doctor to explain what’s going on as it happens and you should be more comfortable.

they dont hurt me at all but everyone is different...you should also get checked out via ultra sound for pcos if you have cyst and menstrual problems as well

Hey I'm 26 and I've just had my 1st one yesterday. I cancelled so many times as I was too scared to go. BUT in all honesty, the smear itself was absolutely fine. Of course slight discomfort but no way as bad as I imagined. you'll be fine hun. be brave ❤ it may save your life!

They're uncomfortable for a second but they don't hurt. The worst you'll feel is a slight pressure and maybe a super light poke feeling for like a half a second (almost like a quick sharp cramp) then its over. The whole thing takes 30 seconds from start to finish.
