Parents have different last names. Which should the kid(s) get??

Curious what everyones thoughts are on this topic. And if you have been in this situation, what did you choose and why.

If I had a child before I was married, the child would be taking my last name unless me and the baby’s father were engaged.

Father's name if you are married. If you are not married and it's not looking like you're going to be soon, definitely your own name. My sister-in-law has two kids with two dead beats and they both have different last names, no good. My cousin's baby daddy is in jail and of course she gave the kid his last name even though he beat her and is a POS. 
I am married but kept my maiden name and our son will have my husband's last. I already upset him enough by not changing my last name, I know how much it means to him for his son to have his last name.

we have different last names and my kid will have my husband's last name. I don't want to hyphonate and honestly the only reason I didn't change my name is becuase I had an established professional history with my name. I like his last name but it would have been a pain in the butt to change mine. so it depends how you feel about it. how strong your ties are to your name or his name. if one of the names is awkward like Cockburn. there's so many factors.

We had kids before we got married, and my last name meant a lot to me so we hyphenated the kids’ last names. Even when we got married, my husband promised if we had any more kids, they would always be hyphenated (even though I had changed my last name to his). Do what you WANT, don’t worry about what anyone else did or thinks is best. You could give your kid an entirely different last name. You can name them whatever you want.

I wouldn't be okay with my kids having a different last name than me.
I'm in favor of the whole family taking whichever is the coolest surname. Not just defaulting to the man's last name. But evaluating which last name sounds better and letting everybody have that one. It's ridiculous that there are still people passing down last names like Butts or Coch or whatever. 
If we both had bad last names, we would have chosen a new one.

I have my fathers last name. My mom and him were never married. I loved having his last name growing up and after he passed away it made it much more special to me. I’m glad I have that little part of my dad to forever carry with me.

Mother's name if the parents are not together at all, and still probably if they are unmarried but still together. Fathers name if they are married or otherwise STRONGLY committed.

If you're married the baby should have the father's name. If not, either the mother's or hyphenate both.

I am in a good place with my boyfriend, I'd like to get married. I just decided from day one that our kids would have his last name. We've never actually spoken about it, he nicknamed the baby both out last names though. His last name is double barrelled as it is, so adding mine would make it too long anyway.
