First month on birth control

Lindsey

Hi ladies!

So I started birth control for the first time ever (yaz) on July 1st. And—knock on wood—have not really had any negative side effects except for more fatigue than usual. So last week I noticed that I was starting to have some PMS symptoms (extreme irritability/mild depression/insomnia/food cravings/hormonal breakouts) which I thought was strange because one of the reasons my doctor put me on yaz was to help with my PMS since it can get really bad some months for me. Then on Sunday I started feeling like I was having cramps and low and behold on Monday morning, I was bleeding as if I had a period. I know breakthrough bleeding is common the first few months so I kind of expected that. I apologize for being tmi, but the blood is SUPER thick and brown. It honestly looks like chocolate. Is this normal? And if it’s breakthrough bleeding, I shouldn’t have PMS symptoms, right? I’m so confused! Tonight will be the first night I start taking my placebo pills.
