How many weeks is considered safe for baby's arrival?

I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant with my first. I'm just always in a panic that my baby will arrive earlier than 40 weeks and possibly face challenges of being born too early. I have no complications yet other than gestational diabetes. Does anyone know at how many weeks the baby can arrive and still be completely normal in development? I guess this is just to put my mind to ease with every week passing. Thanks so much ladies!

I'm an NICU nurse and currently pregnant at 33 weeks 5 days. I have seen many 33 weekers do fine. They are usually on little to no oxygen and seem to have a shirt NICU stay unless other complications arise. My personal goal is making it to 36 weeks. I am currently in bed rest for preeclampsia so I doubt I will make it to term (37-40weeks). I know at my hospital with a singleton pregnancy 35 weekers can stay downstairs with mom unless they have complications. Anything less than 35 weeks must go to NICU. Little boys are a little slower which is why my goal is at least 36 weeks. 35 weekers may require small amounts of oxygen or have trouble with feeding for a little while. As far as developmental delays from being early I would say 34 weeks is pretty safe.

Viability is like 24 but they typically have issues (not always).  I had my son at 32 and he's now 4 and completely healthy.  Has a better immune system than any kid we know and is actually advanced for his age.

One of my best friends delivered at 34+5. Baby went home with them after she was discharged later in the week. Some babies will do better than others being so early, try to relax. I think with GD you're likely to be encouraged to deliver earlier anyway aren't you??
