Is gentrification a bad thing?

I love 1A!
Anyway, yes it’s a bad thing. Where I live it’s the hottest topic right now. Everyone wants to live in my neighborhood. There was a recent publication that called it one of the “coolest” places in the world. 
The problem is that gentrification is driving out the people who made it cool in the first place. Not shockingly that means an influx of primarily white hipsters and an exodus of primarily PoC. 
We don’t need a third cold pressed juice store, or another microbrewery, or another Michelin starred restaurant no one living here can afford to eat at. We don’t need community resource centers closed. We don’t need our art painted over to put up expensive housing developments. 
We do need better resources to keep long term residents here. We do need to do more to help prevent violence, because yes that’s still a problem here. It doesn’t make the neighborhood a #edgy place to live, it makes it a terrifying one. 
The Renaissance Model is really the way to go. Provide resources to improve the community from within when it’s needed.

Absolutely. It's just another way to take a shit on the lower class. As it is, they can barely afford a two bedroom apartment. Then you've got all these luxury condos and townhomes springing up all over that cost nearly 3 times what they're worth and soon there is nowhere that a poor person can afford to live. I've found a handful of places I could actually afford to move to and the list to get in is closed because there are so many people who cant afford to live anywhere else. Despicable.

I think gentrification CAN be done well, but unfortunately it usually isnt. 
when it is done in a way that creates affordable housing and rent stability for long time residents and leaves some of the original character of the neighborhood, I see no problem with it. 
but how often does this actually happen? Every gentrified neighborhood I can think of forced long time residents out due to skyrocketing rent. 
my own city is trying to address the issue of affordable housing now but its a case of too little too late. Many people have already been forced to move

Yes, its impacts do harm. Neighborhood revitalization agreements between cities and business do a better job of bringing up run down neighborhoods, without driving away poor residents.

Yes because of it (and several other factors as well) rent in Idaho is fucking ridiculous. I realize it’s not as bad as California or New York but when somebody is asking for 800+ for a shitty one bedroom one bath house and minimum wage is 7.25 in the state of Idaho, it’s aggravating. Pardon my language but it’s so maddening to me. -.-

I think on one hand, raising the value, fighting crime in a high crime area, and helping clean an area up is not inherently "bad". the issue is when doing these things cause locals in that area to be forced out. if its done in a way that benefits the local people, I think it can be good. but usually, its done at the expense of the locals, not for them. that's when it becomes a bad thing.

Yes. 
Unfortunately, I work in (and enjoy working in) the tech industry so I am part of the problem. I live in an absurdly high-rent area where living costs are through the roof, displacing life-long and lower income residents in the area. It’s sad but my company and industry are here and I’m not able to work remotely in my role at this time.

I'm not familiar with that interview. I don't think it's a bad thing if it is balanced with affordable housing so not everyone is ran out. I do think it is good to rehab old/abandoned buildings instead of constantly building and expanding out into nature.
