How did your 16 month old (or similar) react to a newborn?

Please share your experience if you have any of brining home a new born and how your 16 month old took it.

Mine are 13 months apart! My oldest did really well, she gave up her binkie for her sister. Ever since she saw her younger sister using one, she no longer wanted the binkie, and only gave it to her sister. She throws away the newborn’s diapers. Loves to help in any way 😊

My son was 17 months when his sister was born. We’re now at 19 months and 2 months. He still mostly ignores her, but is starting to show interest here and there. He came over out of the blue the other day to give her kisses and I thought my heart might explode. He had a rough phase where every time I was holding her he wanted to be held by me or someone else too, but he is doing better with that finally.

She did really well. Mine are 16 mos apart. The first bit is crazy but once it settles it’s so much fun. She loves to kiss him when he was tiny. She still does and he’s 10 mos and can chase her around lol.

I think it really depends on your child's temperament. Mine are 15 months apart. My daughter is pretty ornery and she does get jealous at times. If he's crying though she just stands and stares or points and laughs, acknowledging him. She'll throw toys in the bassinet to try and share. She tries to pet him but is a little rough. We're working on that though. Most of the day she ignores him though which I think I prefer. It's harder as a parent though. You want to love both your kids and sometimes one just has to wait.

My son turned 1 the day after his little sister was born. He has done well with it so far. He did go through a month or so of being kinda sad that his mommy was busy with little sister. Eventually he just accepted it and was OK. He has tried to share his toys with his sister and when she cries he will try to give her his pacificer. It is really sweet and just melts my heart. He likes to try to pat her and such but I try to keep him away because he just isn't old enough to be reliably gentle.

Mine are 16 months apart. He likes to go for her eyes and only gets jealous if I’m in a single chair holding her where he can’t climb on and sit beside me like the couch. We read books while I’m nursing her or he eats in his high chair. But he loves her. When she wakes up in the morning and cries he runs looking for her in our room, he knows her name now, will “hold” her for a few seconds. But the best part is that he asks to pet her all the time by pointing at her and humming. And he kisses her all the time. Today he even made his bunny toy kiss her

My daughter is 22 months and is always talking about babies. She wants to look at baby pictures 24/7 and talks about the babies at daycare. So I’m hoping that she’ll be really happy with her new sibling! She’ll be 2  1/2 when the next baby is born!

Following! I will have 2 girls just a few days over 16 months apart, and I'm a little nervous. My almost 1 year old is definitely strong willed and though we're working on it, it still makes me wonder.
