Does the news/media ruin good deeds?
So had a conversation with my coworker today. About a week ago, 3 kids in a neighboring city found a wallet with $700 in it and returned it to the owner. The story went viral and of course the kids got a lot of praise. Now, the local news is doing interviews with them and people have sent them gifts and what not. My coworker and I were discussing if it’s taking away the “lesson” of doing good deeds, and if it’s teaching people that you’ll get rewarded for doing good stuff when you don’t always. (Assuming karma isn’t a thing.)
You see a lot of people do stuff like invite a special needs kid to prom, or do something special for someone in the hospital. Do you think when that stuff goes viral we “ruin” the specialness of the act of kindness? Also, do you think people do these types of things to get “famous”?
