Doctor VS Patient
This is not intended to be a personal discussion but rather a scenario from which people can pick the main points and debate who was at fault so please keep that in mind. Say what you honestly believe
I have a family friend, she’s 16 and her mother went away for two weeks and she was home alone. During this time she had developed a chest infection so, like any normal person, she went to the doctors. This was the first time she had ever gone on her own. The doctor diagnosed it and gave her a prescription, it ended up that two of the medications she was put on she was allergic to. These allergies were listed in her medical record due to previous allergy reactions. Her mother gets home a few days later and she’s having a reaction, so the mother calls up the surgery. The receptionist says that the girl should have told them about any preexisting allergies, yet the mother argues that the doctor should have looked up any previous allergies. The girl also insists that the doctor never asked her if she had any allergies, and she didn’t know she had to mention them as what she was given was a sub brand of the stuff she’s allergic to. The mother was particularly concerned as she was away and if the daughter had gone into full blown anaphylactic shock she could have died and no one could have helped.
Who is at fault in this situation? Is it the patients job to mention allergies or should the doctor have been more thorough with their examination? We’ve all had a busy day and forgotten to say/ask something that we, because of our employment, think is obvious but in this case it could have (but thankfully wasn’t) fatal
