Sedatives knocked me out during my contractions

Palesa

My due date was on the 21 of April but nothing happened on the day, no sign of baby coming out, nothing. Then the next day I started having light contractions, very regular though, every 10 min. Lasted the whole day so I knew that she won’t be coming that day, as the contractions were still far apart. The following day, they started getting more intense, still 10 min apart. Only in the evening that day they progressed to 5 min and that’s when I called my midwife and she said we should start making our way to the hospital. When I got there she checked me and I was only 2 cm dilated and baby was still high up my cervix. So was asked to walk around to get the process going. Walked for 2 hours and when she checked me again I was only 3 cm. Midwife said it seems like I’m dilating and getting effaced quite slow, so she said I should get some rest and see how it goes in a couple of hours. Couldn’t sleep because of the cramps so she gave me a mild sedative to knock me out and get some sleep. As soon as she administered it, I slept in a split second. After an hour I woke up cause the contractions were getting pretty serious now. As soon as the contraction ended, I just passed out. It would wake me up again and I’d pass out again. It was the weirdest thing, cause after the contraction I would try and stay awake but I would just pass out. A few min later they were getting to 2 min apart. When she checked me I was about 6 cm dilated. That’s when she broke my water. Around this time I could control myself from not passing out as the sedative was starting to wear off. 3 min after my waters broke I shouted I NEED to push. My midwife was like push? She then came to check and I was already 9 cm. She’s like wow you’re right, that dilation went quick. She then asked me not to push when that contraction comes, she’ll let me know when I can. She was so supportive throughout, kept me so calm. Then she prepared the water for water birth as that was my birth plan, but those contractions were so painful I said there’s no way I’m standing up from this bed, we will do it just here. Then she gave me the go ahead to push and under 15 min my baby was out. She said for a first time mom I pushed really well, no tears or cuts. After holding my baby I was so relieved, wow. She was born on the 24th of April 2018. But the contractions don’t end there, I though as soon as baby is out you forget about the pain. Then there’s the pushing of the placenta as well, another contraction. But not as intense. Giving birth is so beautiful I would do it again and again. I really wanted a water birth I won’t lie, but don’t regret not doing it as my baby is the most precious gift ever❤️
