Is social media making people more lonely or more social?

I was looking at documentary and where the documentary was on how social media affects people. It's making some people who are connected to people in reality feel connected to people all over the world. It's also making some people isolate themselves to just the online world. It's also making some people vain and selfish. What do you think ?

Lonely. Humans need face to face interaction. Using a screen to talk to someone effects the brain differently than when we talk face to face.

I think social media kind of isolates people in a way. I grew up without it (thankfully) and though it has its pros like keeping in touch with distant family members, I also feel like we rather wish someone a happy birthday on Facebook than to actually call them up and say so. 
I honestly feel the internet keeps people away from others in an unhealthy way especially those who suffer from social anxiety. Instead of fixing the problem, it just exacerbates the issue. I see this first hand with many adolescents, teens and even adults.

There's not one general answer. It depends upon the person. Personally, I'd be anti social with or without social media. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I vote both. Most of the people I talk to are my social media buddies. I haven’t met them in person and probably never will. 
In real life I have very few friends so if they’re busy I’m pretty much isolated with my LO until my SO gets home or a family member is free.

Well, since I’m 20 I’ve had the privilege of growing up in this technological era - yes, I regard it as a privilege. 
As someone with AVPD (Avoidant Personality Disorder) going through my mid teen years to now being a young adult, social media has been a fantastic tool that seamlessly works its way into my life. 
It’s a learning point, a distraction, and a source of entertainment. It helps me connect with people who also have personality disorders, and anxiety. It takes the pressure off of talking to friends on bad days. It’s a distraction for the really bad episodes.
And you can class the “distraction” as a bad thing if you wish 🤷‍♀️ but the hours I’ve spent watching other people’s live art streams, learning how to perfect my own technique, drawing as an outlet, has been an amazing help for me. And has enabled me to reconnect with my artistic side that I felt I lost for many years. 
I think that people don’t understand, that for me, socialising would always be a problem. Regardless of whether I was born now, or 30 years ago.

Because of bullying I'm very antisocial and social media definitely helps me and but sometimes it feels lonely. I wish I could meet up with people that I become social media friends with because I know they have ideas like I do.

Lonely. I feel there’s a lot of drama and things on FB that can make a person depressed. That’s why I deleted mine a year and a half ago and I don’t even care about it anymore. I have the real world

Lonely.
I used to be a very social person. I’d hate sitting around home and always planned events with my friends and plans for every weekend. I love people and meeting new faces. But then social media became a huge part of my life. My job relies on social media for success even. And now instead of making plans to go out I find myself spending more and more time on social media talking to people I don’t know vs. meeting new people in real life. It has made me feel incredibly lonely. I’m working towards finding a happy medium since my job does play a huge role with the media.

I think it’s just making us vain. And maybe slightly more dumb...these dumb challenges like the tide pods or the get out of the car to dance whilst it’s driving are really making me think it’s killing brain cells. I’m not sure what the other reason it could be. Perhaps people have always been dumb and they just now have the ability to showcase it?
