CAN YOUR BABY READ ?

so my daughter is 18 months we go over the ABC and she watches alot of alphabet videos which she loves ! and now she can recognize some letters and say them .  has anyone ever got their babies to spell out words and things like that so young ? is this normal for children or what ? lol

You can technically teach a baby to read by 3, but it holds no value as their comprehension and decoding ability will stagnate and continue on a developmentally appropriate trajectory for their age. Early literacy doesn't consist of teaching a child to read in the sens that you understand it. Children need to crawl before they walk, and so too must they learn to rhyme, and learn so many different decoding skills. At 18 months, a child is better off playing. I am so serious when I say that. Children learn many social skills that they need, though play. That is not to say you can't continue watching alphabet learning videos, but the results are mostly superficial. It's the same as when I taught my daughter to recognize the word "Texas" on sight. It doesn't mean she comprehends it, and she can't use that information in any way other than to recognize that the word is Texas. You have taught your child that the names of the shapes see sees are "A,B,C, etc," but she doesn't associate the letters with their individual phonemes, and she certainly won't be able to blend them to decod even a simple CVC word. She also will NOT be able to spell words. That is even more developmentally inappropriate for an 18-month-old. Your effort is better spent on nursery rhymes, finger plays like the itsy bitsy spider, telling stories with expression, and unstructured play.
So, yes it is normal to manage to teach an 18-month-old to recognize letter shapes and name some, but no it will not result in genius or anything like that.

He knows ABCD and then random letters.

We do easy flash cards with my son (just words written in block letters). He can recognize letters and choose the correct flash card words from a set. It's more just fun for him, he gets really proud of himself when he knows he recognized the right one. We're using a lot of Montessori style techniques because it's what I was raised with. I think it's great to teach kids things like this as long as there is no pressure, 'teaching time' is kept short and the kid is enjoying themselves! I think that it will boost their confidence in themselves.

same here. my son is 17 months. he says ABCD and he love watching alphabet videos. he also says baa baa whe he see sheep in the video and says neigh neigh when horse comes in video.
