Is anyone a nurse/going for nursing?

I'm hoping to start a nursing program in the spring and know for sure I want to work in either pediatrics or labor and delivery? Does anyone work in either of those departments? What's it like? What can I expect from school?

I absolutely love it!
The good: kids are risiliant. Nothing really knocks them down. They're almost always smiling, always laughing, always...well...being kids. And it's so much fun being able to interact with them. The things they say and do! They brighten my day. You'll never have more fun patients than in peds. Toys and bright colors and silly jokes abound. You will have a funny story to tell every day. there is never a dull moment. 
The bad: kids die. There. I said it. The unthinkable. And it hurts EVERY time. Kids are hurt. Sometimes on purpose. And you have to be the one to get social services involved, and sometimes there isn't a happy ending. It. Is. Hard. It is heartbreaking. It is devesating. And the worst part is, you can't mourn because there are other kids that need you. 
The ugly: kids cry. A lot. They're hurting, they're sick, they're scared. Parents will gripe and yell and scream and fuss. To them, you're the superhero that's supposed to fix everything and make it better...and sometimes you can, sometimes you cant. You really have to be able to handle emotional scenarios well. You have to be confident, strong, unbreakable. Because if you arent, the kids will get scared and anxious, and the parents will tear you apart. They don't care that you have other patients. They don't care that you're at the end of a 14 hour shift and haven't slept for over 24 hours. They don't care. The only thing they can understand and care about is their child, who needs you. So you have to be there 100%. There is no "off days" or "bad days". There just isnt.

So is it easy.....? No. Not at all. But is it worth it all? Absolutely. It's amazing, and I'm so blessed to be a part of it.

I just graduated from nursing school and I'm currently working in OB. I absolutely love it! It's also the hardest thing I've ever done. It pushes me physically, mentally, and emotionally. It's a challenge everyday. It's amazing to feel accomplished and that I'm making a difference in someone's life. I wish you luck! ☺😊

Can I get a job in OB or Peds. With just an associates in nursing as long as I pass my boards? Or do i need a bachelors?

I'm actually starting school next spring for  pediatric care. I was going to be an OB but I want to work with children too. Lol. :)

How often are there 12 hour shifts? Is it possible to get a job with 8-10 hr shifts daily, or would I have to work 12 hr shifts all the time? I'm definitely fine with it occasionally, but I want to start a family soon after I find work and don't think 12 hr shifts would be good on my body while pregnant, and raising young children.

I am a nursing student and my minor is psych! 😁☺️. I definitelty want to do either OB or emergency. Being a tech already i have little experience in the environment and i absolutley love both. Peds is definitely not for me, i participated in one pediatric code and spent the rest of my shift trying not to cry and zoning out. I can't do it at all it takes a very very special person to be able to handle it and do the job.

I've been a nurse for 2 years. I currently work in an ambulatory surgery center, but I've been trying to get a job in OB, Peds or NICU since I passed my nclex!! Not easy in NYC!
