IUD Insertion Experience

So today I got my Mirena IUD in! I hear people ask about them all the time so I wanted to share my experience.

So to start off with some background, I’m a 20 year old female and I am sexually active. You pee test (pregnancy), they ask you about the last time you had a period and the last time you had sex. (Again, pregnancy)

I went in. I wasn’t very nervous until I changed and sat in the doctors office. While they put my IUD in, I also got a sonogram so they could see where the IUD was going, so that was fun because I got to watch them put in in via sonogram as well.

They laid me down, I spread my legs and I just relaxed throughout the whole thing. The IUD inserted has to pass through your cervix, so if you don’t have kids, your cervix will be tight and it might hurt to feel it pass through. It didn’t really hurt for me and it passed through my cervix smoothly. After that though, they couldn’t line my IUD up in the right spot properly, so they had to re-adjust and enter me twice.

It’s nerve wracking, it’s scary, and it’s very intrusive to have medical tools and random people in your downstairs area, but my main advice is to RELAX. Breathe and just go limp and keep breathing! The doctors were amazing. They were kind and sweet and always made sure I was doing okay!

Now, if you aren’t used to cramping, it is going to hurt. Cramping pretty badly while on my period is normal for me, so this pain was tolerable, but my cramps stayed with me for about an hour after the procedure. I didn’t prepare as well as I should have because I didn’t take ANY ibuprofen and I didn’t eat beforehand either, so I felt sick afterward. Once I took some ibuprofen and got some food and drink in me, I felt considerably better. That was honestly my fault.

That was my IUD experience! It wasn’t terrible! If you’re driving, I’d recommend having someone go with you so they can drive you home afterward. Give yourself some rest time too!

If anyone is considering it, I would suggest it. It’s only day one, but I hear it works great! We shall see!

Feel free to ask me any kind of questions that you may have. 💕
