Tell boyfriend about birth control?

My boyfriend and I have been together for quite a while now, but right now we’re far apart. I’m visiting him soon and I made the personal choice of getting a depo shot. We both made it clear that we’re ready for sex. Should I tell him through text that I got the shot? That’s how we mainly communicate considering we’re far apart right now. I don’t want to make anything weird.
