Is it ok to hide a pet in a college dorm room that doesn’t allow pets?
I’ve been following a debate on reddit recently about how many students are hiding a variety of pets in dorm rooms like hamsters, cats, small dogs, even snakes, pet spiders, etc and people are getting pretty heated over it. The general argument for doing so is that people love their pets and don’t want to leave them behind, their pets are what majorly get them through life, their pet has special needs and can’t just be left behind, they just want something to be able to come home from class to, etc.
Some say that it really isn’t a big deal if the person can keep it contained in the room bc they’re already paying a very high amount for housing so in their mind they deserve to be able to have at least a hamster, others say it’s irresponsible as a pet owner bc you can get kicked out and have to rehome the animal, others say it’s ok because pets can help give students something to care about and stay motivated and as long as the animal doesn’t escape it really shouldn’t matter if it goes unnoticed, etc.
Some are also saying that people, including roommates, can have severe allergies to pet hair and that’s why it’s unfair to smuggle a pet in the room as it can effect the people in nearby rooms, but others say that if allergies are that severe people shouldn’t be living in such a large shared space to begin with as there should be an expectation that even if pets, candles, smoking weed, etc are banned people are still going to do it.
There was also a mention that people were getting angry over nothing— some people said they had secretly kept pets in their dorm for years without people finding out or without the animal ever causing a disturbance, so it’s more than likely that the people who were very upset over hypothetical pets being there were actually already living with neighboring pets that didn’t cause problems and they just didn’t know about it.
There’s also the point of most dorm rooms being too small for dogs/some cats to begin with, but for hamsters it can be a fine amount of room, so does it depend on the pet to begin with or should every student respect the rule of ALL pets being banned as “the rules are the rules”?
So, is it all right to hide a pet in a dorm room? Would you report someone for doing so to the RA (residence admin who usually deal with these issues) if you found out about it or would you actually not mind and even like having the animal around, or are you just a “live and let live” kind of person and wouldn’t really like it but wouldn’t go out of your way to say something?
