What are your thoughts on ....

Question

What are everyone's opinions on using an appetite enhancer on a child who won't eat enough? I don't know much about them so I can't really say how I feel. If anyone has more info on them put it in the comments. I'm really curious about this.

Kids are weird. One day they want nothing but avocados and fruit loops and the next nothing. Unless they are significantly losing weight, they will figure out a balance. Best thing I’ve found is to not make mealtime a war. Let them decide when they’ve had enough, let them decide how much they have to eat. Always encourage, never deny.

i had horrible eating habits as a kid, but i loved chilled vanilla ensure. would put me right to sleep too on a full tummy! there’s also chocolate, strawberry,
as well as lighter or fuller nutrients.
if need be you can ask your dr for chewable vitamins. they taste great and a kid may be more fond of them.

My son takes ADHD medication, it helps tremendously but it does affect his appetite. So in order to keep his body weight up we supplement between meals with pediasure shakes, Clif bars for kids, beef jerky, etc. anything to help him between meals because his metabolism is so high, and his medication requires him to stay at/above a certain weight.

What kind of appetite enhancer exactly? Was it something recommended by the pediatrician? My youngest son eats very little—we think it’s a “texture” thing but he says he’s just not hungry... despite not eating a lot he continues to grow, gain weight, and remains in the 50th percentile. Our pediatrician never suggested appetite enhancers but did suggest PediaSure and vitamins to help him get some more protein and to supplement the things he may be missing from his diet. We also play around with different foods a lot—most things don’t work, but some seem to spark his interest. This is definitely something to talk to a pediatrician about or a pediatric dietitian.

Why don't you give your child pediasure I gave this to my daughter and I saw a difference in 2 weeks gained very nicely. They have different flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry just use it to help your child gain while you find foods your child will eat to keep them healthy. Kids usually grow out of the habit of not eating but if your child truly needs to gain some weight then try it. Make sure to let your doctor know what you are doing or planning to do and see if they can give you further advice as to how to handle the situation. Make sure that you supply this drink with small amount of different foods so the child does not just want the drinks.

If your child is underweight, then there are these shakes in the baby food area that are basically meal supplements. They’re healthy and recommended anyways.
