How do baby showers work?

How do you make sure no one brings the same gifts?
What kind of gifts are given/should be expected?
Do you only invite women?
What is the spectrum of women I can invite? Just close friends, or work friends as well? Or acquaintances and extended family/friends mutual friends too?

Answer

Most people register somewhere for the gifts they would like and the registry information is included with the invitation. Some people will go by what you have on the registry, some will just buy you whatever they want. If you have duplicates of something, most people will give you the receipt or a gift receipt so you can take it back and get something you still need. 
You can invite anyone you want to. Most of the time it’s only females, but some people have co-ed showers now. It’s up to you, or if someone is hosting it for you, they might give you a limit to how many people you can have.

You make a registry and people buy from that list (at least they’re supposed to, some people just buy whatever they want). If you get doubles just return them. And they’re traditionally only women but couples showers are becoming more common, you can invite whoever you want, it’s your party. My thinking is more people =more gifts.  😂
