Cultural Appropriation or Appreciation?

Note: just noticed I added this to wrong group... sorry guys 😬

First off if people get nasty I’m deleting this whole thread. I just want to see some opinions about the subject.

I’ve seen people getting really heated when people adopt or take up a certain style or trait of a culture they were not raised in. Nicki Minaj was under some fire for wearing Asian garb in some of her recent performances (though Hollywood is fickle anyway. They had a “Catholic themed” Met Gala this year and to many that would be considered insensitive as it’s a religion not your fashion and if the theme had been Muslim or Native American Indian- just two examples- there would have been an uproar), various ethnicities getting angry when hairstyles are worn not natural to their real hair, certain clothing styles, etc.

I recently saw a woman I graduated college with have a colorful wedding with some more traditional Indian garments present and she was ROASTED on Facebook because neither she nor her husband are Indian.

My deal is, I see it as appreciation and it’s about the context. If an African American girl wore straight hair, is it not because she likes it and thinks it’s pretty? Same goes for white women wearing dreds or corn rows. However, I do see it as inappropriate if the person doing it were shitting on the culture in another way or doing it in poor taste or not acknowledging the history behind it. I’m blanking for examples right now.

But to me, if you’re adopting something, why isn’t it more often seen as a form of flattery? No culture or ethnicity is innocent in this- we have all adopted or tried something that many would say is not “ours”
