Is autism very common where you live?

I was just wondering because I live jn NY and it is everywhere, it seems like a lot of women have children or at least one with it. I'm wondering if it's just misdiagnosed or if it's happening everywhere?

My 2 year old son is moderately autistic and some days he seems to have it severe. He was diagnosed this January and my sister-in-law is an occupational therapist and she tells me that it's getting more common. Some of the people she works with blames it on some genetics and some on environmental factors. My son is the first person to have Autism in both my husband's and I's family...that we know of. It makes you wonder! We live in Pennsylvania and we're expecting our third child and we're both worried that this child will have it too.

I read somewhere that autism represents 1 out of 100 birth, so it's pretty common.
I'm a school teacher in France, and there is always at least one kid with autism in every school I've worked in.
Keeping that in mind, there are multiple forms of autism, with multiple symptoms. Most autistic kids won't look at you in the eyes, but some will a little, etc... The situation is different from kids to kids.

Autism is on a spectrum, where some children are obviously affected by it and have great difficultly accessing mainstream schools and day to day life, and others are so mild you rarely notice it. I am a teacher in the UK and have taught many autistic children in my 5 years of teaching. More children are becoming diagnosed with it now, as I think teachers, parents and the healthcare system are more aware of the symptoms to look out for xx

I see that you guys have some useful information here, I was just wondering what the long term effects are on a child who grows up to be an adult with mild to mod autism? Will they marry, work? Can they go to a regular high school? How about college?
