Toddlers on tablets?

Danielle • Met in 2004. Together since 2008. Married since 2014. Mommy to Blake Olivia (2017), Jonas Alexander (2021), and baby #3 (ETA March 2023).

So my grandmother passed away and I had to go to Peru with my daughter (15 months) by myself...my husband had to work and couldn't get off. Blake is a seriously chill baby, but the thought of two flights (first flight, 3.5 hours and second flight, 6.5 hours) panicked me. Everything I read was all about packing lightly, so I knew I couldn't bring everything imaginable. We didn't own any tablets or anything, but thanks to Amazon Prime 1-day shipping (🙌) we got the kid's Fire tablet just in time. I was always kind of against them in the sense that I figured she wouldn't need one until she was older, but OH MY WORD that thing was a life saver. I had two of her favorite books and a stacking cups toy, but that was it. The 3.5-hour flight was great and she had lunch, played with books, and slept for an hour and a half. The layover consisted of me speed walking while carrying her in my ErgoBaby carrier to the next gate and then boarding that plane almost immediately (so basically, no running around and exploring time for Blake). Now, I said she is a calm baby but she is a serious walker, roamer, and getting-into-things'er so I was mainly worried about the long 6.5-hour flight. That tablet was a miracle. She doesn't watch TV at home and just knows three movies: Moana, Coco, and Sing, Coco being her faaaavorite one. She starting getting antsy and the beginning of that flight and wanting to get off my lap...she didn't have her own seat) so I popped on her head phones, put on Coco, and she sat as still and quiet as a mouse for about an hour and a half until dinner. Dinner was a good distraction for about 30 minutes, played with books for another 30 minutes, and then watched about another 30 minutes of Coco before I started her bedtime routine. She slept for the last 3 hours until we landed.

Now that we're home, that thing is going into a drawer and hiding somewhere until she's a bit older, but I am SO THANKFUL I had it there with me. What are your thoughts on tablets and devices for toddlers?
