Depends. Are you financial responsible for the child? Do you give up sick day/PTO to stay home with the sick baby? Do you feel responsible for the child, or is it just helping out?

My husband came into my sons life when he was a month old. He has never treated him different, his family treats him as his own, and he fully adopted him 2 years ago. My son is almost 6. His sperm donor wanted nothing to do with him and gave up rights willingly. We’re ttc our second now and he won’t treat them any different. My son is his son and always has been.

I agree with Alicia , but it also depends on the type of person the step parent is . Not all people are fully capable of always keeping a kid as their own , some over time will use it against the other or treat one different from blood child ..
