My daughter is named Maya. Not one person has ever called her May-uh when they've seen her name. It's My-uh.

I think it’s a common name and most often spelled maya. Never heard it mispronounced. Mayan culture (the maya Indians) — it’s pronounced the same. I would not worry at all about mispronunciation. And I would stick with the spelling Maya because that’s what everyone will write down when they hear it. Second most common spelling is probably maia but I think you risk more mispronunciation.

I doubt Maya will get mispronounced frequently, if ever. Mya on the other hand probably would be. You’d get the Mee-uh My-uh confusion there.
