Private scans

Have any of you paid privately to have additional scans or an early scan? It's very early days for me but I'm going to see family in Canada just before the 8 weeks mark and I'd love to be able to show a scan photo or at least be reassured that all is ok before I go. I don't expect I'll be able to get an NHS scan that early so I'm thinking about paying for a private one.

I'd love to hear what others have/will do. If you did go private, how did you find a provider?

Just an update from me - I saw the GP today and because I'm high risk and more than a little anxious he'll refer me to the local early pregnancy assessment unit for an early viability scan around 7 weeks. I'm glad I asked, it's just saved me £95!.... Which in all honesty I'll probably spend on another scan later on if I have long gaps between the consultant ordered ones.

Also, in looking into private scan options, I saw places that offer quick peak appointments that are pretty cheap (one was only £39). I don't think they do diagnostic checks or anything but just give you a chance to see baby for a few minutes.... could your hubby be persuaded to let you have one of those?

I like to find the silver lining in most situations and getting to see the baby sooner and more often will almost certainly be the silver lining to being high risk. There's a good chance I'll get scans every fortnight after 20 weeks because of my risk of pre term birth. I'd rather not have that risk of course, but the extra chances to see the baby will be nice.

Aww that's good news. I'm having to go from the 21 July to the 10th Sept for my next scan, my OH won't pay for another one either haha :) xx

Thank you all! I'm going to see my doctor next week and see if she'll send me for an early scan. If not I'll definitely have a private one.

we paid for an 8 week scan with some people called Ultrasound now,We found out we were pregnant at 3 weeks 4 days, and then as I was considered high risk in the beginning and it's our first I couldn't not do it because I was so stressed!!It was a lovely experience nurse was lovely we were with her for a good 20 mins saw baby and heard the heartbeat saw it in 3d as well and I got 5 pictures to take home.Fast forward to last week when I had an NHS scan at 12 weeks 6 days, I was in the room for 5/10 mins, they didn't let me hear the heartbeat but I saw it and didn't let me just relax and see the baby they just measured me and sent me away, with one picture for home. Both experiences were amazing but I would say if you can afford a private scan then definitely do it. My next one isn't until 10th September and I would love to have another one!!!Congratulations xx

Thank you Lyndsey! I'm high risk too and I'm not sure how I'd cope with waiting until the 12 week scan...especially when we're going to Canada for three weeks. I'd really like to know things are ok before we go.

I paid for an early scan at 8 weeks + 5. I'm a ftm and I was being overly cautious. It cost me £39 (I'm in Glasgow) and it was only a short 5 minute scan. I saw my baby, saw their heartbeat flickering away. Got 3 scan pictures on a disc and a sheet of paper with EDD and things on it. Was well worth the money x

This was my 9 week scan. It took me 2 years to conceive and I was so worried and nervous I just couldn't wait until the 12 week scan. We went to the baby scan studio and it was £90. I definitely recommend it for peace of mind x
