Binky help

My son is 21 months and loves his binky, he would only get it at nap and bedtime. We decided once we came back from vaca which was Sunday that we would take it away. Of course he is upset about it. I have let him cry it out for a little then go comfort him and he will cry/wine for a little and go back to sleep. Tonight when I checked on him he was sucking his thumb. Ugh! I don’t know which is worse! Any advise? And yes I know I prob should have eliminated the bink earlier.
