First grade, on the stairwell walking in a line back to our classroom from art. Our teacher broke down passing another in the hallway whispering to her what happened. We had no idea what was going on! We found out later on, lots of city firefighters/police officers in our town. 2 I knew from childhood were killed. Will never forget. The vivid memory of all the raw emotion will live with me forever 🌆🇺🇸🙏

I was in 6th grade, our school decided it wasn’t their place to tell us, so we didn’t know what was going on, but it was obvious something was... a girl in my class got pulled out (her dad worked at the pentagon), my science teach (a big burly dude) was in tears & just kept leaving class trying to make a phone call ( his brother was a flight attendant & he was trying yo reach him), all the teachers just seemed shaken. Finally the last hour of the day, they came over the intercom & said there had been a terrorist attack, but they wouldn’t say more... our teacher was balling but kept saying she couldn’t tell us anything. That was the longest& quietest bus ride home. I remember getting off the bus & my brother & I just running as fast as we could Home. My mom was sitting on her bed with the TV on, crying, and we just all crawled in bed with her & watched in silence.

On 9/11 I was 7 years old and I was 5 blocks away from where the planes hit. I remember everything that took place on that day. I had just went inside school and this kids Dad who was a firefighter ran up the stairs behind us telling us to get into the classroom and sit below the windows. I had gotten in trouble luckily and my parents had never left so I was able to be released to my mom. I stood there looking up at that one building and then the plane circled and hit the other building. And it caused an explosion and then all I could see was black smoke. I remember seeing people jump from the buildings, I remember the chaos on chamber st that day. I remember my step dad driving up to church st so my mom could use the pay phone to call my grandma because service was down and as she was speaking the first tower fell. I remember hearing my mom yell in fear telling my grandma she had to go because he building fell. We raced to 14th st to pick my sister up from school and it seemed like it took forever to get gone that day. We lived across the water and everything was shut down in BOTH directions. We didn’t get home until that evening

I came home from soccer practice, was home alone with my younger brother and wanted to watch TV but all there was “extra: planes crashed into twin towers USA”

I was 4 years old and in my Grandmas house in La Plata, Maryland. Not too far from DC. My parents were missionaries and were visiting my mothers parents. I was in the living room when all of the sudden my mother ran to the TV and turned it on to the news. I saw that these two building were burning down and was confused why my mother was wailing and in tears. What I later found out was that my grandmother worked in the twin towers. My mother didn’t know if she was in their or not so she was assuming the worst. When she got home, my grandma told my parents that she was coming in to work late and got stuck in traffic before she could make it to work. My parents were relieved but still very upset over the other lives that were being taken. I didn’t understand the full impact of this lost at 4, but I will never forget how hard that day was for my family and our country.

I was a sophomore in college. I was getting ready for my morning English class, had turned on the TV in the communal room in my dorm apartment. I thought, oh god, more unrest in Bosnia, as I wasn’t in front of the TV. I watched the second plane hit, and was like, oh shit, this is in the US. I called my dad immediately. Classes were voluntary that day, and the campus was somber.

I was standing in line to get into the school building. I was in 6th grade. We weren't informed too much other than something bad happened and some kids were going home.

I was in high school in history class. I remember the teacher turning on the news and saying that this day will forever be remembered in history.
