Testing the day of when you are supposed to have gotten your period , is not really testing early.  Neither is testing the day after a missed period. 
Generally speaking,  if you are pregnant,  if you were to get a positive,  you would get it within 24 to 48 hours a of a missed period,  since hcg levels tend to double, tripple and quadruple within 24 to 48 hours.
If you have not gotten a positive within that time frame, chances are u wont get one until months into your pregnancy.  Ot actually happens often, that women dont even get a positive on a home pregnancy test and fund out because they do a blood test.
For the vast majority of us however,  testing a day after missing your period, if pregnant,  will give a positive.  Theres no need to wait a whole week to test. 
It is advised to wait and see IF you miss your period.  Once u miss it, you can go ahead and test. No need to wait for a whole week.
