How does therapy help sexual abuse victims?

I’m 12 weeks pp and I think it might be time to talk to someone. But idk if or how a therapist will help.

I highly recommend seeking someone who specializes in sexual assaults. If you have a local rape trauma center, then go there first. Therapy helps you speak about the trauma, confront and accept what happened to you, deal with the conflicting emotions you may feel, etc. If you have the right counselor, and are committed to the process, you will heal.

I saw a therapist for about 4 years and didn't talk about my assault, during that time I thought therapy didnt help anything and I would have anxiety/depression forever. Looking back, I didn't really have a good therapist for me and I didn't trust them much. 5 years after my trauma I finally opened up about it to a GOOD therapist that I trusted and liked. Thats when the real work began. It was so hard and for a couple months I went off the deep end a little bit, but now its been about 2 years since I opened that door and I can honestly say I'm in a much much better place than before I talked about it. I have my bad days still of course, itll never necessarily go away...but I can cope better and deal with my emotions more effectively. I think ultimately it comes down to how you work it. If you find a therapist you like and trust, and you're willing to put in the work and get through the hard parts, its so so rewarding. You deserve some relief, you can do this! Best of luck to you
