Is age really a huge difference?

My boyfriends 18, and I'm 16. Is that bad? My parents think it is.. But my sister is 22 and her BF is 43.

It's not so much that you're 2 years apart; it's the fact that you're 2 years apart and so YOUNG. Age gaps in your 20s and 30s aren't such a big deal because after high school/college you might actually be in a similar place in life. As a teenager, though, you're going through SO MANY CHANGES that he's worlds ahead of you, in actuality. :/

Ultimately, though, as long as you guys aren't doing anything illegal and if you really think you have that much in common, it seems objectively to be fine...? just cut your parents some slack, because I would be really uneasy about an 18 yo guy dating my daughter. ^_^;

It's a bigger deal when you're a teenager. Your parents are still adjusting to you growing up. They have spent the last 16 years protecting you. So it's going to be a balancing act. Try and find out what their biggest concerns are, and find ways to reassure them. Also, be smart and mature. If your parents can trust you to make wise decisions, it will be easier for them to let go a little bit.

i think it would only be a big deal if you were having sex with him because you're a minor and it could get him in some serious trouble legally. my now husband and I started dating when I was 16 and he was 18 but didn't have sex until marriage so I never considered the age gap inappropriate.

No, not wrong. It's not a huge difference, even for your youth. Going away to college is a big deal and difference that causes trouble in lots of relationships at that age, though.
Do look up the laws in your area for age of consent and statutory rape. Depending on where you are, it's legal for 16 year olds to have sex with people are 16-17, 16-18, 16-19, 16-21, or 16 and up. Just google "age of consent in (your state)."

I'm 33 and my hubby is 48. I think the age gap only matters when you're young. I would freak out if you were my 16 year old daughter. He's an adult and that can make things weird. It could even be illegal in some states

From experiance, I was 15 and dated a guy that was 17 and I got pregnant I'd consider not have any sexual activity until u both r ready to deal with the conciquince that come after that its very easy to get pregnant and it is not a good idea to have sex with out a condom at ur age not saying its bad to get prego but just saying u will learn the hard way. Baby's r a amazing  gift trust me I want more I'm 17 now my sons 8 months and ima wait a while but for u I'd wait.
