As it is said in psychology, the most important thing is that a child understands WHY they are being punished. Punishment is not wrong and is essential for discipline (although it doesn't have to be spanking), but if the child doesn't understand why they are being spanked or having their favorite toy taken away etc. then they are just going to be fearful and not really learn the importance of what they did wrong. So spanking is okay if it is done in combination with thorough explanation of motives

Disciple should always be approached from a least necessary to accomplish your goal. IMO spanking should not be your “go to” first course of action. If a stern look and serious conversation works for your kid, that’s what you should do. But there are certain kids and certain situations where I believe a spanking is appropriate. However & this is a big thing... you should never spank angry! You need to be calm if you are going to spank and not just doing it because you’ve lost your temper.

I was spanked when naughty. I think it affected my self esteem somewhat, but i also turned out ok and respected my parents. I'm not sure if i will do that to my son though.

There's a difference between spanking to discipline a child and beating them. My husband and I were spanked growing up and I plan to raise my daughter the same way. She gets a pop on the butt with our hand when she misbehaves. No other form of discipline has been effective (time out, taking things away, etc) I feel like if done properly, it will not result in the child learning it's ok to hit people. It will teach the child right from wrong.
