Metformin and NO PCOS?

My doctor has prescribed me metformin as my cycles are irregularly long and I'm not ovulating every cycle. I don't have PCOS so I thought it was kind of strange to take metformin, but my doctor said it could help and to try this before Clomid as Clomid can have some nasty side effects.  Would love to hear some experiences, did it help your cycle, did you conceive, did you have any side effects?? I'm on the fence about starting it. Thinking about trying one more cycle naturally. Even tho my natural cycles are up to 70 days long! Yikes!! I don't know what to do!! Thanks ladies!!
