Zoloft & Pregnancy.. is it safe?

My OB is putting me back on anti depression medicine (Zoloft) and I heard that this can cause birth defects. I’m 7 months pregnant. Will Zoloft hurt my baby? Did Zoloft cause problems for you? Did it actually help you?

I just started Zoloft at the end of 31 weeks pregnant- I’m 32 weeks now- so just started. I was afraid at first. My step dad who raised me is very sick with stage 4 cancer and a few other things going on- it came about very quickly a little over month ago now, the diagnosis, and it’s been a down hill battle since.. I told my OB I was very very depressed she suggested Zoloft. I told her I was worried about post partum depression and she said prevention is the best thing to do. So I basically looked her in the eyes and said is it safe? You’re sure it’s safe? She said yes.. so I’m trusting her. There are plenty of pregnant women on Zoloft, I knew this prior to her suggesting it- it’s one of the safest anti depressants for pregnant women to take and for me I know in my heart I NEED to take it, it’s what’s best for me and baby right now. Baby and I are doing just fine on it. Ultimately you have to ask yourself — do you want to be in a better place for baby when they’re here? Do you think you’re well enough without it? For me I want to be in better mental state and before getting pregnant I was on an SSRI (Prozac) that worked WONDERS for me. I’m very prone to depression and anxiety. I felt great on Prozac, like a brand new person. I’ve fallen back into the hole so I’m hoping Zoloft helps like the Prozac that’s why I’m taking it.

I took it from about 13 weeks until my daughter was 2 months old. It made me feel a lot better and honestly I couldn’t have made it through that pregnancy without it. My daughter was born very health for 2 nights she was a tiny bit jittery like the slightest bit you could barely notice but didn’t seem to bother her. I feel that if you have a healthy pregnancy and you dr. Recommend you should do what’s best so that you can be there for your baby when they need you. I also feared post partum and that’s why chose to take it. Because if I didn’t take care of myself how could I take care of my baby. I read a looooooot on it and read a lot of the researches on it.

I was on Zoloft prior to becoming pregnant and stopped once I found out. Doc said it is one of the safest ones to take but my personal opinion I didn’t want to chance it. My SO and I both decided it was best for us and our baby for me to wait to get back in it until after I give birth. I think it’s a personal decision, I’ve ready about issues it has caused in 3rd trimester use, but at the end of the day it’s up to you, your doctor and your SO if they are involved.

My coworker said that she also took Zoloft in her 3rd trimester and her daughter turned out better then her other 3 kids. She is currently 15

It is known to cause birth defects, but I believe those are mostly associated with first trimester use. If you are a danger to yourself or others the benefits outweigh the risks, but if you’d like to seek a second opinion then by all means do so. I’ve been taking cymbalta, there are no negative side effects associated with it. Check w/ ur doctor if it’s something that’s can work for u
