Cervical checks necessary?

I am 36.5 weeks - are cervical checks really necessary ? I want to refuse - I feel there is no medical purpose even if I am dilated it doesn't say much about when I'll go into actual labor as some people can stay dilated at a certain number for weeks! During labor I can understand more with knowing. Anyone else feel this way? Or refuse them? Thanks. I just don't see the point and the fact the rest of the day I have shooting cramping pains after.
