Circumvallate Placenta?

Emily • Pregnant with our first, a baby BOY!

So we went in for our 20 week ultrasound last week, and this Monday we found out that we’ve been diagnosed with a rare placenta abnormality called “circumvallate placenta.” Essentially, the baby’s side of the placenta is smaller than usual, and my side of the placenta kind of wraps around it and folds back on itself.

At this point baby is happy and growing normally, but apparently this increases our risk for preterm labor, placenta abruption, issues with amniotic fluid, and growth restrictions in utero. Nothing is wrong yet, but I’m freaking out about the possibility that something might go wrong!!! I’m supposed to “take it easy,” and we have an appointment to see our hospitals director of maternal and fetal medicine in about two weeks.

Has anyone heard of this before? Does anyone else have it? I haven’t found much information online, which is both good and bad lol. Trying to stay cool, but adjusting to being high risk is not fun!
