Promise Ring

I want to get my girlfriend a promise ring for our one year anniversary. We'll both be 17 by that time. I know that she's the one I want to be with and I know that she'll love to get a promise ring. The only problem is what our family will think about it. Should I wait until our 2nd year anniversary or our 1st year anniversary? Any advice will be helpful. Thanks.
