Pay off debt before TTC?

Question

I'm wondering if anyone else debated whether to pay off debt before trying for kids (student loans, mortgage, car payment)? If so, how did it play out for you? Do you regret or are you happy with how it worked out? Just looking for others' experiences, not recommendations for myself 😂😂 Thanks.

Absolutely pay that debt off, I can tell you it’s worth every penny. Not having car payments or even student loan payments frees so much money up and will give you more options. However don’t let that be the deciding factor that stops you from having a child.

Those are debts that most people have they are “normal” debts to have and most people are still able to comfortably raise a child with those debts. Now if you had said thousand of dollars in credit card debt...well then that’s another story

In a perfect world we’d ttc when the debt is all paid off, but realistically that could take longer than my biological clock is willing to wait for. We decided that we’d wait until his agency sends us to a more permanent location. Stability is what’s most important and if you can provide that then you’re golden.

We sat down and did a budget to see what we’d be willing to get rid of to help save up for baby expenses. Then we made a commitment to stick to it! It was amazing to see how much we were spending on crap. And seeing that we could make it work on paper helped us feel less uncertain.

My husband won't let us start trying until he had his car paid off, it has been for a few months now,  along with having a certain amount of money saved up.  I would say each couple is different and you both need to have a deep conversation about it.  Also take into consideration if you don't have the stuff paid off how much extra money do you have each month?

My mindset is "there is no 'perfect' time to have a baby, as long as both partners are ready". Most people live with the debt you mentioned and have kids. Although, maybe saving up a couple thousand to help with the hospital bill is a good idea.
