Are you doing the genetics NIPT testing?

Question

My OB offered the testing for genetic anomalies and gender. I called my insurance, whom informed me that the gender wasn't covered. I think I'll stick with the NIPT without gender, but hang any of y'all done this test? Did y'all still get billed without gender ?

We decided not to with ours. Didn’t with our son either. Figured what will be will be. And he was perfectly fine. Couldn’t fix it even if there was an issue. So we decided why torture ourselves if they find something. But that’s just us.

Not doing it because we can’t afford it.  Otherwise I’d do it in a heartbeat.  If there was something wrong, we could prepare for it.  Also, knowing the gender would be a huge deal for me.  Depression has me feeling a little distant from the baby and I think it would help to know gender.

I was told any genetic testing outside of the 1st tri screen wouldn’t be covered since we don’t have any indications for genetic abnormalities (family history or maternal age).

We get Panorama and I’m pretty sure it automatically includes the sex, I think partly because it also tests for sex-chromosome linked disorders (like XXY chromosomes or three X chromosomes, that stuff) so it’d be weird for them to not include the sex. It’s technically covered by our insurance but last time I did it I think I still had to pay something like $500 for it, but it came out of my FSA so it wasn’t really an issue. We’re fortunate our family doesn’t really have any medical issues that are expensive so I usually put a lot in my FSA/HSA from payroll deductions but we rarely would use it all just from regular stuff so it’s ok to use it for this. I know we got a bill for something like $3000 though and our responsibility was a lot less than that because of the insurance though so I guess that’s where it comes in. But it’s not cheap for us.

Typically if it’s the gender test portion that’s not covered, the office will have a cheap cash rate. Mine was $100 when insurance didn’t cover it.
I have a history of chromosomal abnormalities and have a cerclage at 13 weeks so it’s required that we ensure the pregnancy is healthy before surgery.

I did it with gender there wasn’t an option for no gender! My office does it through a place that if you do their survey they discount it!

My OB’s office has an agreement with the company that does the testing so if our insurance didn’t cover it we got a cash pay discount . My insurance said they don’t cover it so we went cash pay and will have the results including gender next week. I’m 36 so to me it’s worth it, not that it would change anything but I’d like to be prepared if there are any issues.

I am having it done regardless. I actually don’t want the gender part done if they can’t keep it a secret - I like to find out via ultrasound. If there was a serious issue like trisomy 13, 18, or some other defect that would make life impossible or painful, I would end the pregnancy. It’s not within my capabilities to deal with something like that and it isn’t something I want to add to my son’s life. I know a lot of women are very cavalier about that stuff and are sure they would never end a pregnancy, but that’s just not me.
