Newborn gifts at Christmas that are practical?

Our baby girl arrived in October, what is a practical gift (savings bond, etc) you suggest to family members for your babies? I don’t need another blanket or onesie... any ideas?

I always suggest to my mom to get us passes to things. Last year she got us an aquarium membership and for my daughter’s birthday she got us a zoo pass.

Older toys or larger sized diapers and clothes. It’s nice when they get older to go, “hey, we already have that!” Our son was getting more active at four months, and we had an exersaucer ready for him to use rather than having to go buy one. Savings bonds are great and all, but sort of boring to give as gifts. I personally enjoy gift giving, so I never give gift cards or money.

My son was born at the end of September last year so he was only a few months old at Christmas. With money (checks $100 and up) from our family members we put it in my son’s 529 college savings plan. For smaller money amounts we put it in his Etrade account to invest. The practical gifts I appreciated the most were clothes/shoes that he could grow into, some nice wooden toys that he could play with when he was older, books, and a wool sleep sack (Woolino) that he could use for sleeping when he started rolling.

You could always just ask for simple things you'll need like diapers, ointments, etc. Maybe close family can do some type of photo frame and each year they pick a photo to put in it for Christmas. I think that would be cute!

My son is born in January, so his Christmas and birthday wishlist is mostly things he will need to the summer, autumn and winter again; shoes, clothes, knitted items for winter, glows, mittens, winter hats, toys that will be fun when he gets a bit older. Things/furniture for his room, that we didn’t buy for his nursery. Tiny chair that will be his to have in the living room.
