Is calling a dude a “dick” equivalent to calling a woman a “bitch?”

I just read a post of someone upset that her boyfriend called her a bitch in a text to his friend and it got me thinking.

I’ve had friends who are women text me about their boyfriends, saying that they’re being a dick and I’m wondering why, we as women, give so much power to the word “bitch.”

I myself am in a relationship with a woman and we sometimes use the word “bitch” to each other, but if one of us were a man, I feel like society would say he were being abusive. For example, I’ve said to my gf “you can be such a bitch around your period” when she has snapped at me (and I know, for a fact, that it’s not how she feels about something — it’s just hormones). She doesn’t get offended and usually just responds with “you know I get like this, why are you surprised?” And we laugh it off. Can this happen in a heterosexual relationship, or are things different?

And would you call your man a “dick” to his face? Or is that abusive language? Just curious what people think!
