I think that there needs to be a compromise. Honestly, they knew the dress code before they put the outfit on and went to school. I think that it is a slippery slope though because where do you draw the line?

Also, I don't think that asking them to cover up should make them "ashamed" of their bodies. I think that modesty is a good lesson to be taught, and that not everyone needs to see so much of your body. Not only that, it's not like you're going to walk into the job market hoping to get a job wearing your skanky pajamas.

That's an interesting perspective. However, school is not the appropriate place for wearing skimpy clothes. All kids deserve to go to school without feeling offended or distracted by scantily clad classmates.

Dress codes are also ridiculously worded at times. For instance, our shorts (girls only - as is the case with most dress code rules) had to be fingertip length. So the exact same pair of shorts might be a violation for a girl with longer legs (and longer arms), but a girl with shorter legs could wear then without violating dress code.

I once got in trouble for a pair of shorts that were plenty long enough to meet dress code standards. The problem? I squatted in gym class (which will cause shorts to ride up of course).

When I stood I was instantly told to put my arms to my sides and was forbid from adjusting my shorts beforehand. They were about a quarter of an inch from reaching my fingertips. But if I had been allowed to adjust (as I intended to do anyway) they would have met the criteria by at least an inch (if not two).

But our school was hardcore about catching dress code violations (which ONLY applied to girls with one exception - no sagging). So they would do just about anything to prove how serious they were.

And this wasn't even high school. It was K-8. I was in fourth grade when I got in trouble for my shorts. Eleven years old and I was a 'distraction'. How sad.

When I was in school, there was a dress code for both boys and girls. Girls couldn't wear anything ridiculously skimpy and boys couldn't wear sagging pants  where we could see their behinds. Boys couldn't wear baseball caps, tank tops, or red (gang colors). It's not only girls who have to follow the dress code in most schools... The point is that girls should stop acting like victims all the time because usually they are just wrong and overreacting in most cases. Ugh 😒

Why exactly are schools policing what girls wear and how they present themselves?

Ask yourself this: why does it matter that a girl wears something skimpy? Why does her choice of attire have an effect on how well she learns? Presumably this girl chose her clothes for comfort and individualism - why should her school interfere with that?

Is it not better to allow her the freedom to express herself?

I wrote multiple emails to my old head teacher regarding school dress codes because my sister kept coming home telling us how they'd introduced new rules regarding school uniforms. All were ridiculous.

She'd, along with her form, been told by a member of staff that when male teachers looked up the gaps in the stairs they could see girls pants and it was making the male teachers so uncomfortable they felt the need to complain about it. 
Long story short, I basically reiterated this to the head teacher and told him he should be questioning the types of people he's hiring into his school. Especially if those people go as far as sexualising minors.

I hate dress codes! Have a uniform, great, have some sort of dress code, great. But don't make dress codes so extreme and sexist. And don't even bother with the come back of trying to make the school environment more "professional".
Because guess what? School is supposed to be a learning environment, and should only be about education and furthering your students abilities. Schools should not be based on professionalism, learning is not a caree. So stop trying to make the aim of schooling even more about job seeking than it already is.
