What age do you consider a young adult to be?

So my husband says our 12 year old should be talked to like a young adult.  I say he's still a child. I'm not going to talk to him like I do my adult friends. Advice

I think it’s always important to use age appropriate language but by 13-14 I don’t think you should be “dumbing things down”. I may not cover every topic or use profanity like I do with my friends but that’s because I’m the parent not the friend

I would definitely not talk to them like babies anymore. They need to grow up sooner or later. Everyone said 18 but wonder why their kids can’t even write a check out or pay their own bills. All I think about is your raising the next generation do then and this world right by teaching them valuable things young so they don’t fail as adults. I had a plan since I was 15 and followed through and now successful. I wouldn’t gossip to them but teach them how to budget and how to treat other people. And don’t let them think that bad behavior is okay. I think 13 is a good age to actually step up and show them how to do simple stuff.

12 year old is still a child yes but it never hurts to talk to kids as young adults. If you can talk to your child calmly and explain things for the most part they will understand. I don’t think we give children enough credit.

I say 12 is perfect to start giving your kids guidance just know your limitations if kids can be on social media all day video games where will they learn from stupid stuff on the other end of the screen my sister is 12 and my family does this she loves it a early wAy of learning to be responsible... baby your kids until they’re 18 and see how they take on real responsibilities

12 is just an adolesent. 18-29 young adult. 30+ adult. Just my opinion. I mean im 23 and i still dont feel like a full adult. Still figuring alot of stuff out. Ask him if hes just not planing to let him be a teenager? We just skipping that part?

That age is considered an adolescent. They are growing up, many have started puberty by 12. Your kid isnt a little kid so you need to adjust how you talk to them. Talking to them like they are more of an adult is a good thing and it has its benefits. They will understand more, they will be more cooperative, and less likely to go against your rules if they understand the reason you made them.

When my mother went back to get her PHD in Education, I was about 13 years old. It was at this time that she started to talk to me as a peer as often as a mother, valuing my input and discussing things she was learning and studying in her coursework. The change in how we talked helped me a lot actually. I didn't always have full adult responsibilities since I was still an adolescent, but I was being challenged and talked to in a way that was preparing me for being an adult. To this day it is something I plan on doing with my own child to allow him to progress and develop his perception of the world and his place in it, and to give him an environment where he feels his opinions are valued rather than being brushed off as part of a teenage phase.
