Do you think that people (Homo sapiens) are animals?

Weird question, I know, but I've seen it here and in person. Do you think we are animals? I've had classmates say no (even though it's hard to argue with science oh well). 
 Why do you think we aren't if that's what you chose? Do you have anything backing that that isn't religious material? (eve being created via a rib etc).

We are biologically animals but we are spiritually and mentally something more that transcends the baser animals as  evidenced by the fact we are capable of higher thoughts such as 'what is the meaning of life, the purpose of my existence?' etc.

I enjoy taking a second to laugh at that flawed idea every time it reappears. Laughing is how I cope with the vast and horrendous ignorance of some people.

I was told living things fall into two categories, plants or animals. And I am not a plant sooo....

I'd say we are animal-plus. Yes, we possess all of the traits of animals, but also many that the rest of the animal kingdom do not possess.

Are we a plant? No. Are we a mineral?   No. So... That leaves animal.

Granted we like to think we have higher functioning and "class" but elephants have higher functioning too... So do pigs.

Technically speaking, yes we are animals.  We are mammals and related to the non-human primates like the chimp and bonobo species.

Well the basic classifications are: animal, plant and bacteria.

Also humans are mammals. So yes we're classed as animals. But with our conscious abilities, self recognition etc. we usually thought of as being above most animals.
