Separation or similarity?

Question

What do you personally think defines human beings from other mammals?

How similar are we to them?

Do you think we are superior? If so, by how much? And why?

As creatures capable of more accomplishments than any other animal, are we responsible to protect other species and our environment? If yes, are we doing a good job?

Answer

I think we are separated from other animals because we demonstrate higher thoughts transcending the natural laws. For example, being able to question the existence of a God and the meaning of our lives. This does make us superior to animals but does not give us the right to disrespect them through cruelty and neglect. I think it means we have a greater responsibility towards them because we are a superior creature. Also the fact that we can disregard what is in our own best interests is a distinctly human trait. In answer to your last question we are not good caretakers of the Earth or of other animals. This is also distinctly human and the product of our free will. While other creatures find a relative though imperfect balance we are capable of great personal and mass destruction.
