Is making an engagement ring (instead of buying) cute or cheap?

I've posted about this before, but for those unaware:
I'm a college student planning to propose within the next year, but I don't have a lot of money. My school offers a jewelry making course, and I'm considering making the ring myself because I can't afford to design the custom one I think she deserves. 
I have no experience making jewelry. 
Do you think this is sweet, or stupid?

You can always make the ring and then work on replacing it with the custom made designer one you have in mind, LATER down the road

My boyfriend (now husband) proposed with a handmade ring- I LOVE it! It means way more to me than one that he could have bought- he bought silver and a diamond and all of the ring making tools online and researched how to do it too! He stayed late at work to finish it- I had no idea any of that was happening! It was such a lovely surprise!

Its definitely something cute and sweet.. Just the meaning behind it alone is priceless plus I'm sure you will work hard to make a ring just to make your SO happy and show her how much she means to you and that you are willing to go thru so much just so you can spend the rest of your lives together..
