Small town or big city?

I'm debating on moving into a big town but am a little nervous about my nine year old going to a bigger school. He has always been to a small town school where the population wasn't too high. 'everybody knows everybody', kind of town. My brother and I went to a school in a big city in Northern California and I remember being miserable a lot of the time. If you weren't 'in', you weren't good enough to be friends with. It literally sucked and we've been through several fights, verbally and physically and I do not want that for my son. 
I'm kind of torn in the decision because my son really enjoys his school now and has several friends but if we do move, financially, we will be better off.
Any thought as to what I should do or what I should consider?
I'm literally stressing about this issue.

Financially you should take the move. If he seems to struggle in a big school, maybe you can work toward affording a private school where the population is a little more quaint.

I might mention, being a teacher in a big city, my incoming 4th grade class list has a whopping 33 students on it, yes THIRTY-THREE. No aid. I am one person, I have no idea how I am going to reach 33 students this school year. You won't find big class sizes like that in a smaller town.

I live in a big city I guess you could say. There's 4 high schools, 10 elementary schools 5 middle schools , 8 private schools and that's just for our city. You drive ten minutes north and it's the same amount for another district. This is just Oklahoma

I have always lived in the city. I went to private schools 1-5th grade. Then went to middle school where I was use to my class size being 40 total for the entire 5th grade, to 30 kids being in one class and about 300 kids for the entire 6th grade. It was a culture shock to say the least. I would have to disagree about the stigma of smaller schools meaning no drama or cliques or not getting equal attention as far as education goes because I've come from both.

Private catholic school experience , girls were terrible and talking about blow jobs at 10 years old. Those same girls were the "mean girls" and are now coke heads. Very rich and never had to work for anything and still managed to piss their lives/education away. I was singled out because I didn't have money like they did, and wasn't as cute or skinny.

Public school experience- yes there's many groups of kids, but I found one that took me in and we've all stayed in touch for over 10 years now. I got to know all kinds of people, not just rich catholic kids. I was never once picked on. It helped me get out of my shell to learn about other people's lives, the catholic school kids were all rich and carefree and at my public school I met remarkable people from all backgrounds. I appreciate that kind of thing.

My husband is from a small SMALL town, one stop light town . Has a sister in high school, she's been punched in the face, alienated and bullied and there's maybe 100 kids to her whole class and it's apparently some southern town that's "full of nice people that you won't find in a big city " words from my mil... So give the actual school that you're considering a chance, big city or not.

I would never go from small town to big town but it's up to you. Generally the education isn't as good the bigger it gets because more children means less individual attention due to it being hard having so many students.

I personally could never live in a big city. I hate the feel too it. I love quaint small towns that have peace and community. Usually better schools. Unfortunately big cities usually come with crime, busy life and worst school districts. It depends on what you prefer. I live 20 minutes from 3 major big cities and it's perfect, close but not too far. I on the other hand teach in a big city and the school I teach at is very small. I am one of two fourth grade teachers and it only goes to fifth grade. Big city doesn't necessarily mean big school.

It's a very personal decision. I hate big cities, but some people enjoy them. IMO, smaller towns are more ideal for raising kids, especially when it comes to education. Big cities have big schools, where kids are often drowned in a huge crowd and receive very little one on one attention. The cost of living is generally higher in bigger cities, too.
